Jimena from Cortijo Roman
Jimena de la Frontera is forty kilometres inland from Gibraltar. Dating back to Roman times, it
has a
long and varied history. Jimena is one of
Andalucia's Pueblos Blancos (White Towns) and is situated at the edge of the 170,000 hectare
Parque Natural de los Alcornocales - one of the
most important protected habitat areas in Spain. The Park is host to an immense variety of animals and
plants, making it a paradise for walkers, wild flower enthusiasts, birdwatchers and all nature lovers.
The bird life is particularly outstanding, as it comprises not only many species indigenous to Andalucia
but also many migratory species from North Africa; vultures, storks and bee-eaters are a common sight.
Modern Jimena offers you most of the services you would expect in a municipal town including many
shops, restaurants, bars, banks, post office, police station and petrol station. It also has a train
station and a limited bus service. The town is thirty-five minutes from the Mediterranean, forty-five
minutes from the Atlantic, forty minutes from Gibraltar and one hour from the spectacularly
situated city of Ronda. Both Cadiz and Jerez are close enough for a day trip.
