Walking from Cortijo Roman
The countryside surrounding Cortijo Roman offers magnificent walking in the huge Los Alcornocales Natural Park. There are
many walks in different terrains and at different levels of difficulty ranging from relatively gentle walks through the
cobbled streets of Jimena, its castle and the valley of the river Hozgarganta to more challenging hill and mountain walks.
Walking in Andalucia is superb in all seasons of the year; from the gentle green beauty of the spring and
early summer (January through to June) and then the arid beauty and heat of the summer months (July, August
and September), when walking is comfortable only in the early morning or the evening, and finally the mellow autumn months (October
and November).
It is perhaps not widely recognised that Andalucia is very pleasant from December through May when the daytime temperatures are
well-suited to "shirt sleeves". There can be torrential rain but it seldom lasts for more than a day or two and is followed
by sunshine and brilliant blue sky. During this period the range of wild flowers is breathtaking and the whole countryside is
a riot of colour and scent. This period is definitely the time to take a winter break away from the gloom and cold of the
British winter - airfares are cheap and Andalucia lives up to its Moorish description, the
land of milk and honey
