Old Olive Grove, Jimena

Old Olive Grove
Jimena

September is still hot in Southern Spain, certainly hot enough for swimming in our pool or the river. Curiously, Jimena Municipal Pool closes at the end of August even though the air temperature can still be near 30°C!
Olives are developing well and fruits, such as peaches and nectarines, are superb.

During the first weekend in September the adjoining village, Estacion de Jimena, stages a festival culminating in the parade of the statue of the Virgin Mary from the Convent through the streets of the village. The statue is mounted on a (heavy) wooden structure and is carried on the shoulders of the young men who wish to show their devotion to the Virgin Mary. A village band, various dignitaries and young ladies precede the statue and the whole procession is followed by a large crowd of local people.
In the morning of the procession there is an exciting flamenco mass in the picturesque convent. During the three day festival there are a number of other events and there is also a fair with rides for the children and a very festive atmosphere.

Vegetable Stall

This month we started having a Farmers' Market on Sundays in the Farm meadow. A number of local vegetable and fruit producers offered excellent quality fresh produce and there were a number of stalls selling home-baked bread and a wide selection of pies. More immediate needs were catered for by a stall selling a range of filled rolls, soup, cakes and a selection of drinks ranging from coffee to Wheat Beer. The atmosphere was great with a good representation of both Spanish and English people.

We combined our second Market with a Romeria which is, roughly speaking, the Spanish equivalent of the British Gymkhana. There were about 40 riders, with about equal numbers of British and Spanish, participating in a number of events; some of which were traditional gymkhana events and some traditional romeria events. There was a marvellous atmosphere and the riding, although competitive, was always done in good spirits. The horsemanship was of a high standard but one young Spanish chap from Jimena excelled and took just about every prize.
